It's a videogame writing cliché to compare any hack-and-slash RPG to Diablo; however, the comparison is somewhat warranted because almost no one has made an action RPG to dethrone Blizzard Entertainment's masterpiece. Some of these clones are better than others (see Titan Quest), but for the most part, games in the genre disappear in a sea of mediocrity. Enter Fate: Undiscovered Realms, the stand-alone expansion to 2005's Fate. While it doesn't manage to outdo Diablo, it is a decent addition to the genre.
You start out by creating a basic avatar. You choose your character's skin, hair, and a few more basic cosmetic features. Original Fate players might be delighted to know that developer WildStudios has allowed them to import their original characters into the expansion. Uglore the Shaman says, 'I didn't always look like this, I think it was the crawfish I ate.' For those who've never had the pleasure of playing the original, the Fate series differs from the typical hack-and-slash RPG because there are no predefined class archetypes to choose from. There are no wizard or warrior characters here. Instead, you get the option to level up individual attributes. Want to make your hero a tank? Focus on your strength and vitality traits while raising your axe, sword, or club stats. Conversely, a powerful mage can be made by honing skill points into the magic trait and magic-wielding weapons. Once you're set, it's time to do quests for various non-playable characters. These quests typically consist of you going down to the lower levels of a dungeon to retrieve stolen goods, kill various monsters, defend certain statues, or escort friendly NPCs. While many RPGs allow you to accept every side quest that you come across, Fate: Undiscovered Realms only allows you to tackle three missions at a time. Completing these objectives will often net you experience, money, and gear. Speaking of gear, there's quite a bit of armor, accessories, and weapons to pillage. The game includes a color-coded system that identifies rare items. Purple items are magical, teal gear is both magical and rare, and yellow items are extremely rare artifacts. Some weapons allow you to embed special stones on to them to give them various stat boosts like speed, magic, and more. All of your gear is stored through a typical grid management system. As with most RPGs, you can only carry so much gear with you at one time. I would have appreciated an auto sort feature as shifting items around tends to get a little tedious, but the lack of this feature isn't a huge problem. You can, however, store all of your belongings in a decent-sized chest if you find yourself running out of storage space. You spend most of your time traversing between two realms. There's the icy Outpost of Typhon and the forest Outpost of Druantia. Both areas contain similar dark and dreary dungeons that force you to descend a series of downward spirals. There are a lot of levels in both dungeons and each area has randomized loot and respawning enemies. The creature designs are undeniably weird. Sure you've got the typical dragon and giant scorpion creations, but the game also features floating brains, savage mushroom men with spears, and other kooky abominations. As you progress further down the stairs, you will encounter different and more challenging creatures. 'I say you he dead.' As with the original game, Fate: Undiscovered Realms teams you up with a pet companion. At the out start, you choose between a cat or dog to accompany you. Your pet aids you in battle and, like you, gains levels through combat. Your pet can also help you carry and sell loot. What adds a twist to the pet system is that you can feed your pet fish you either caught or bought to temporarily transform it into a spider or other devastating creature for a limited time. Your pet can be pretty useful; many times enemies will attack it first, which gives you the opportunity to kill them before they hone in on you. Adding to your pet's usefulness is the fact that it can't die. When its life bar reaches zero, it runs around crazy-like until it slowly regenerates a small fraction of its life back. You can also heal your pet at the expense of your own potions if you so desire. While your pet can't die, you certainly can. Unlike most games, Fate: Undiscovered Realms really punishes dying. After you're dead, you're presented with three options: 1) Regain full life but lose some experience to return to your point of death, 2) regain full life and return to a nearby point at the cost of losing gold, or 3) regain full life, but you have to race to get to your gold pile at your point of death before it disappears. Fate: Undiscovered Realms can get really challenging on the default difficulty. Higher level enemies can overwhelm you, you can receive status effects like 'poison' or 'slow,' and there are also random traps within treasure chests. Luckily, there are four different difficulty levels to choose from. Even though the game is already pretty tough, there's still a setting for the sadistic gamer in all of us. In the hardcore mode, death is permanent. You die once, and that's it. While it certainly has a lot going for it, the game does have flaws. For instance, for whatever reason, you can't save the game and continue playing. If you want to save, you have to quit out to the main menu. In addition, I don't know why the game doesn't pause when you access your menu screens. This means that you can get attacked while sorting through your inventory screen. There are also some minor path-finding issues that will make your character run into walls. In addition, if you time it right, you can hit enemies on the other side of walls. However, my biggest gripe is that due to the game's keep-going-down-flights-of-stairs design, it doesn't feel like you're on an epic adventure; it actually feels rather limiting.
